DO No. 05/CH(IC)/2023 Datyed: 09th May, 2023

Dear Colleague,

Devotion to duty is the highest form of discipline. It requires us to prioritize our responsibilities above our personal desires and comforts. It demands that we work tirelessly towards our professional goals, no matter how difficult or challenging the road may be. It requires that we apply ourselves to the job at hand, big or small, with all our positive energy and concentration and strive to deliver excellence in terms of quantity, timeliness and quality.

Apart from the personal satisfaction or fulfillment from a job well done, we become beacons of hope and inspiration to those around us. Our perseverance in the face of adversity shows others that anything is possible if we are willing to work hard and stay true to their values.

Ultimately, devotion to duty is not just about fulfilling our obligations or meeting deadlines. It is about embracing a higher cause and living a life of purpose and meaning. When we are devoted to our duty, we become agents of change and transformation and leave a lasting legacy.

Last week, I met two such outstanding professionals – Sh. Krishnappa & Sh. K Adinarayana, both work as gardeners in the upcoming Palasamudram campus of the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes & Narcotics (NACIN). The dedication they have showed towards the development and upkeep of the nursery is remarkable. We are thankful to many such, often unsung workers, who give their utmost best day in and day out.

Moving forward, in the week gone by the DPC for regular promotion to the grade of Commissioners of Customs and Indirect Taxes [SAG], for the vacancy year 2023, was held in UPSC on 02nd May, 2023. Subsequent steps are underway so as to issue the promotion orders at an early date.

On the anti-evasion front, it was a busy week! Officers of the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) detected a case involving evasion of GST on acquisition of compulsorily convertible debentures. Pursuant to the detection an amount exceeding Rs. 56 Crores has been recovered.

In another case, DGGI officers detected a case of payment at a lower rate for items wrongfully declared as Ayurvedic Medicine. An amount of more than Rs. 111 Crore has been recovered subsequent to the detection.

Further, an amount of Rs. 287 Crores was recovered by DGGI in a case involving non-payment of GST on support services rendered by the Head Office of an assessee for its Branches. Kudos the officers for their excellent work!

Destruction of seized drugs is a vital part of our commitment towards the goal of a Drug Free India. Keeping this in view, last week, Delhi Customs Preventive Commissionerate, destroyed about 1000 kgs. of Ephedrine, 28 kgs. Heroin and 84 grams of Cocaine. I would urge other formations to take stock of seized contraband lying with them and take steps towards suitable disposal of the same.

Before I sign off for the week, I would like to share about a series of projects, carried out under Swachhta Action Plan by the Alwar CGST Commissionerate, for bolstering the infrastructure of Government Schools in their vicinity. It was a part of this project that last week a Digital Teaching Board was inaugurated at a Government Girls School in Alwar.

Till next week!

Yours Sincerely,

(Vivek Johri)
