Notification No. 49 (RE-2000) 1997-2002, dated February 7, 2001, issued by the Ministry of Commerce, allows the free import of articles intended for relief and rehabilitation efforts in Gujarat following the earthquake. The notification is issued under the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992, and in alignment with the Export and Import Policy (1997-2002). It specifies that such imports are permitted freely, subject to the conditions outlined in the Department of Revenue’s circular No. 7/2001-Cus. dated January 27, 2001. However, items listed as prohibited under the ITC(HS) Classification of Export and Import Items are not allowed. This measure aims to support public interest and aid the victims of the Gujarat earthquake.

S.O (E) – In exercise of powers conferred under section 5 of the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992 read with paragraph 1.3 and 4.1 of the Export and Import Policy, 1997-2002, the Central Government hereby allows import of articles intended for donation for the relief and rehabilitation of the people affected by the Earth Quake in the State of Gujarat, ‘Freely’, subject to the conditions specified in Department of Revenue circular No.7/2001-Cus. dated 27.01.2001. However, the items, import of which is ‘Prohibited’ as per the book titled , ITC(HS) Classifications of Export and Import Items, shall not be allowed to be imported.
