Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd., a prominent Indian pharmaceutical company, has announced that it has received marketing authorisation from Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) for its generic semaglutide injection. This medication is intended for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus whose condition is inadequately controlled by diet and exercise alone. The semaglutide injection can be used as monotherapy when metformin is unsuitable due to intolerance or contraindications, or alongside other diabetes treatments. The product will be available in Brazil as a pre-filled, multi-dose injectable pen, offered in two dosages for once-weekly administration.
Brazil is a significant market for diabetes treatments, with approximately 16.6 million adults aged 20 to 79 living with the condition, placing it sixth globally in terms of diabetes prevalence. The semaglutide market in Brazil is valued at an estimated USD 244.6 million, reflecting the substantial need for effective diabetes management solutions in the country. Dr. Reddy’s entry into this market aims to address this demand by providing a cost-effective alternative to existing treatments.
MV Ramana, Chief Executive Officer of Global Generics at Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, emphasised the company’s commitment to expanding access to semaglutide across key markets, highlighting Brazil’s significant diabetes burden as a critical factor in this strategic move. The approval by ANVISA represents a vital step in Dr. Reddy’s broader strategy to make semaglutide more accessible to patients in need. The company plans to launch the product in collaboration with Aché, a Brazilian pharmaceutical company.
Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, headquartered in Hyderabad, India, has a longstanding reputation for providing affordable and innovative medicines across various therapeutic areas, including diabetology. The company’s expansion into the Brazilian market aligns with its mission to ensure good health is accessible to all. Analysts note that this development could enhance Dr. Reddy’s market position in Latin America, potentially increasing its share in the growing diabetes treatment market. As the global demand for diabetes management solutions continues to rise, Dr. Reddy’s strategic initiatives in emerging markets are likely to be closely watched by industry observers.
