Summary: The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN), through its advisory dated 4 November 2026, has announced proposed revisions to the numbering formats of E-Way Bills and Consolidated E-Way Bills with effect from 1 January 2027. The proposal follows the substantial volume of E-Way Bills generated, which is expected to exhaust the capacity available under the existing numbering formats. The E-Way Bill Number is proposed to increase from 12 digits to 14 digits, while the Consolidated E-Way Bill Number is proposed to increase from 10 digits to 11 digits. GSTN has advised all stakeholders, including taxpayers, GST Suvidha Providers (GSPs), ERP and software providers, and API integrators, to modify their applications, APIs, database schemas and validation rules to accommodate the proposed formats. These modifications are necessary to ensure that systems can process the revised identification numbers without validation failures or operational disruptions. The proposed changes will be made available in the Sandbox environment shortly to enable stakeholders to conduct testing. Further technical details will be published on the E-Way Bill Portal. GSTN has requested stakeholders to complete the necessary system modifications and ensure readiness well before 1 January 2027. The advisory therefore highlights the need for timely technical preparation and testing to facilitate a seamless transition to the revised numbering formats.
