DO No. 33/News Letter/CH(IC)/2024 Dated: 12th August, 2024

Dear Colleague

In a virtual signing ceremony last week, CBIC and New Zealand Customs signed the Customs Cooperation Arrangement for collaboration in application of Customs laws and facilitating investigative assistance. The said Arrangement shall serve as the foundation in furtherance of Customs cooperation in mutual areas of interest to both administrations, further deepening the vibrant bilateral partnership between the two countries.

The Mumbai Central Commissionerate has introduced a Hindi magazine  titled named historic Kanheri Caves named after the historic Kanheri Caves. This publication not only incites interest and a sense of connection with the official language but also deepens our understanding of India’s rich cultural heritage. The practice of naming departmental magazines after historical sites is commendable, as it simultaneously promotes the use of the official language while encouraging tourism and historical awareness.

The officers of DRI Chennai Zonal Unit thwarted an attempt to illegally smuggle cigarettes into India through Chennai Port. Acting on specific intelligence, officers intercepted a container that was falsely declared as containing “Plastic Hangers, Paper Boards 86 Plastic Packaging Materials” and a thorough examination revealed the presence of smuggled “Gold Flake” and “Marlboro” brand cigarettes. The illicit consignment containing 62.30 lakh cigarette sticks valued at Rs. 10.59 crore was seized. Commendable vigil by the officers!

Crackdown against narcotics continues – a major operation by multiple Zonal Units/ Regional Units of DRI busted a clandestine Mephedrone manufacturing facility in an under-construction building. Acting on precise intelligence, the team seized 51.95 kg of Mephedrone in liquid form, valued at approximately Rs. 78 crore, along with raw materials and equipment. The operation led to the arrest of the syndicate’s mastermind and three of his associates under the provisions of the NDPS Act. Kudos to the team effort!

Until next week!

Yours sincerely,

(Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, Chairman)
