Failures on Income Tax E-Filing Portal Before Due Date: Representation to CBDT

Summary: The Karnataka Taxpayers Association (R), Shivamogga, has submitted a representation dated 27 August 2026 to the Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), highlighting technical difficulties reportedly being faced by taxpayers and tax professionals while accessing the Income Tax e-Filing Portal. According to the representation, the portal has been repeatedly rejecting correct login credentials in several cases, while the same credentials sometimes work after multiple attempts. The Association stated that the problems were being experienced across different devices and accounts and were causing inconvenience and anxiety as the due date for filing Income Tax Returns approached. It emphasised that tax professionals were working under significant time pressure and that portal failures at this stage could prevent genuine taxpayers from complying with statutory filing requirements within the prescribed time. The Association requested CBDT and the concerned technical authorities to immediately investigate and resolve the login and other portal-related issues, ensure uninterrupted functioning of the e-Filing Portal and provide appropriate relief to taxpayers if the technical difficulties continued until the due date.

Social Media Reactions and Editorial Note: The representation comes at a crucial time, with the 31 August 2026 Income Tax Return filing due date approaching for taxpayers with business or professional income who are not subject to audit.

Concerns over the functioning of the Income Tax e-Filing Portal have also surfaced on social media during the current filing season. Taxpayers and tax professionals have, at different times, reported difficulties such as inability to log in, slow portal response, interruptions in return filing and problems in completing tax payments. The Government has also acknowledged that taxpayers may experience transient technical issues during periods of peak concurrent load and has outlined measures taken for strengthening and monitoring the Income Tax e-Filing Portal. Some professionals have also urged the Income Tax Department to ensure adequate portal capacity during periods of heavy filing traffic and sought extension of due dates where persistent technical problems prevent timely compliance.

At the same time, portal performance has not been uniformly problematic throughout the filing season. Therefore, isolated user complaints by themselves may not establish a system-wide outage. However, when similar technical difficulties are reported by multiple taxpayers and professionals close to a statutory deadline, prompt verification and transparent communication from the Income Tax Department can help reduce uncertainty.

With the due date approaching, uninterrupted access to login, return filing, tax payment and related services assumes particular importance. Where genuine technical failures on the government portal materially prevent taxpayers from completing compliance within time, the authorities may also need to consider appropriate relief based on the nature, scale and duration of the disruption.

Text of the Representation is as follows:

To, The Chairman,
Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT),
Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Government of India.

Date: 27-08-2026

Subject: Failures on Income Tax E-Filing Portal Before the Due Date

Respected Sir/Madam,

I, on behalf of the Karnataka Taxpayers Association (R), Shivamogga, wish to bring to your kind attention the serious difficulties being faced by taxpayers and tax professionals while accessing the Income Tax e-Filing Portal.

For the past several hours, many taxpayers and professionals have reported that the portal is repeatedly rejecting correct login credentials, while in some cases the same credentials work only after several attempts. The issue is being experienced across different devices and accounts, causing considerable inconvenience and unnecessary anxiety, particularly when the due date for filing Income Tax Returns is approaching.

Tax professionals are working under severe time pressure to complete the filing of returns within the prescribed time. Technical failures of the portal at this crucial stage may result in genuine taxpayers being unable to comply with their statutory obligations within time.

We, therefore, request the CBDT and the concerned technical authorities to immediately examine and resolve the login and portal-related technical issues, ensure uninterrupted functioning of the e-Filing Portal, and provide appropriate relief to taxpayers if the technical difficulties continue until the due date.

We request your urgent intervention in the larger interest of taxpayers and tax professionals.

Yours faithfully,

Sd/–
