In just nine months since the launch of the Aadhaar project in Maharashtra, UIDAI has issued one crore Aadhaar numbers. 52 year old, NK Chheda from Maharashtra has the distinction of being the resident whose Aadhaar number was generated on reaching this milestone. Coincidentally, the first resident to get the Aadhaar number, Ranjana Sonawane, is also a resident of Maharashtra. She received her number on 29th September, 2010 in Tembhli village of Nandurbar district.
“It took three months to cross the ten lakh mark and only another six months to reach the one crore Aadhaar enrolments mark. This is yet another milestone, en-route to our goal of issuing 60 crore Aadhaar numbers by 2014” Nandan Nilekani, Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India said. Enrolments are in progress in more than 25 states and Union Territories by more than 30 registrars through 11,000+ operators.

“Currently, the Aadhaar ecosystem is enrolling more than 4,00,000 residents a day” said RS Sharma, Director General & Mission Director of UIDAI. He added, “Enrolment for the Aadhaar number will accelerate further in the coming weeks, as more registrars begin enrolling residents. Our next milestone is to reach ten lakh Aadhaars a day by October 2011.”

Feedback from the field is being factored in by UIDAI for continuous improvement and the hardware and software is also being regularly upgraded to handle the increasing scale of operations.

This is an excellent beginning. Its multiple uses are also laudable. only what is stated till now about its use, is to be seen in practice.

UIDAI should develop a system wherein the status of issue of thr AADHAR card could be monitored online by applicants. There are thousands of cases where people havent received their cards though they completed the formalities more than 3 months back.
There is in force a system for monitoring applications in the case of issue of PAN cards and Passports.
