  1. Good resource. A few clarifications that come up frequently when practitioners read the Finance Act 2026 rate chart:

    Surcharge applicability in new regime:
    – No surcharge applies on long-term capital gains taxable at 12.5% under Section 112A (listed equity/equity MF) for any income level.
    – Surcharge DOES apply on other LTCG (like debt funds, property) and STCG at normal rates.
    – Marginal relief is available where total income slightly exceeds the surcharge threshold.

Special rate income (like dividends, capital gains) is taxed at prescribed rates BEFORE applying the surcharge to the remaining regular income, not pooled together.

    Section number mapping:
    – Old Section 115BAC (new tax regime) = Finance Act 2026 references the scheme directly under Chapter XII-BA. The computation logic has not changed, only the codification.
    – Old 87A rebate (Rs 25,000 cap) continues in the new Act but with a different section reference. Effective tax for income up to Rs 12 lakh remains zero in the new regime.
