As we all get ready to celebrate the Iconic Week of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, commemorating 75 years of our Independence, we would do well to pause and reflect on what Azadi or Freedom truly means.
From Socrates to Sartre, the ideals of Freedom, as distinct from Independence, have found resonance in the work of many thinkers and philosophers. However, the most evocative exposition of freedom perhaps comes from a poet, Rabindranath Tagore, who wrote in Gitanjali,
Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high; …
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of
dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever widening thought and action;
into that heaven of freedom, my father, let my country awake
True freedom flows from our constant endeavour to improve ourselves and from integrity of our actions. As we celebrate Amrit Kaal, leading upto 100 years of Independence, we all need to keep these ideals at the centre of all that we do.
Moving on, last week on the 50th Anniversary of the World Environment Day, the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics (NACIN) launched a Green Campus Program to plant over 30,000 trees from 300 species on over 300 acre of land at the upcoming NACIN Campus at Palasamudram. It is envisaged that 400 acres of the campus would be eco-scaped with about a thousand species of indigenous plants.
This green campus enriched with biodiversity will be a home to more than one lakh native trees, shrubs and herbs which are endemic, endangered and of high ecological value. Kudos to Pr. Director General, NACIN and his team for their initiative and hard work.
On the enforcement side, in line with our commitment to preserve the natural heritage of the nation, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) interdicted 14.63 MT of Red Sanders, estimated at over Rs. 11 Crore in the international market, from an export consignment declared to contain “assorted toiletries” at ICD Sabarmati. Heartiest Congratulations to Pr. Director General, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and his team for an excellent detection.
Further, on the basis of data analytics, a network of about 500 firms, spread across multiple States were found to be involved in fake transactions in excess of Rs. 700 Crore and consequent passing of fraudulent Input Tax Credit to the tune of Rs. 83.75 Core by officers of Bhopal CGST & Customs Zone. Heartiest Congratulations to Chief Commissioner, Bhopal CGST & Customs Zone and his team.
Before I sign off for the week, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the entire CBIC family who have been working for the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav events with fervour and passion, be it Walkathons, Nukkad Nataks, Plantation of Saplings, Exhibitions or organizing Seminars or Lectures. Keep up the good work!
Till next week!
Yours Sincerely,
(Vivek Johri)
