Biocon Limited, a prominent global biopharmaceutical company, has announced its consolidated financial results for the second quarter of the fiscal year 2027, ending on 30 September. The company reported a total income of ₹4,423 crore, marking a 1% increase compared to the same period last year. The biopharma segment, which includes biosimilars and generics, experienced a 5% year-on-year growth, reaching ₹3,583 crore.
The company’s biosimilars revenue rose by 3% to ₹2,809 crore, while the generics segment saw a 10% increase, totalling ₹774 crore. Despite these gains, Biocon’s net profit before exceptional items stood at ₹44 crore, a significant decline from the previous year’s ₹92 crore. The reported net profit was ₹41 crore, reflecting a 52% decrease compared to the same quarter last year. The company attributed this decline to various factors, including lower other income and increased R&D expenses.
Biocon’s leadership highlighted several strategic achievements during the quarter. The company secured a landmark 10-year partnership in Brazil for its biosimilar Pertuzumab, valued at approximately USD 400 million. This partnership underscores Biocon’s ability to execute large-scale biologics deals and is expected to enhance its presence in the Brazilian market. Additionally, Biocon’s Pertuzumab became the first monoclonal antibody biosimilar recommended under the European Medicines Agency’s new tailored clinical development pathway, marking a significant milestone in biosimilar innovation.
In North America, Biocon continued to expand its market share for biosimilar products, including Yesintek® and Yesafili™, in the U.S. The company also secured over USD 100 million in new contracts, reflecting strong demand for its commercialised products. Meanwhile, in Europe, Biocon received positive regulatory feedback for its biosimilar Pertuzumab and strengthened its position in key therapeutic areas with the commercialisation of several biosimilar products.
Analysts note that while Biocon’s revenue growth in the biopharma sector is encouraging, the decline in net profit highlights the challenges the company faces in maintaining profitability amid rising costs and competitive pressures. The strategic partnerships and regulatory approvals secured during the quarter are expected to support Biocon’s long-term growth trajectory, particularly in emerging markets and new therapeutic areas.
