The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under Notification No. 12/2026-27 dated 17 April 2026, has amended the export policy for Baryte (Natural Barium Sulphate) by introducing a grade-wise regulatory framework. Exercising powers under the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992 and the Foreign Trade Policy, 2023, the government has shifted high-grade baryte into the “Restricted” category. Specifically, Grade A (specific gravity ≥ 4.2) and Grade B (specific gravity between 4.10–4.20), which were previously freely exportable, now require prior authorisation or licensing from DGFT. Meanwhile, Grade CDW (specific gravity < 4.0) continues to remain freely exportable without any licensing requirement. The amendment applies across various forms of baryte, including lumps, powder, and other variants. The objective of this change is to regulate the export of superior-grade mineral resources while maintaining ease of export for lower-grade materials, thereby ensuring better resource management and regulatory oversight.
