The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), through Notification S.O. 2204(E) dated 05.05.2026, amended the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021 in exercise of powers under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. The amendment substitutes the entry in Column 2 against Serial No. 50 of the Schedule to specify “Standalone Hard Disk Drives” as the covered goods. These products will continue to be governed by Indian Standard IS 13252 (Part 1): 2010 relating to safety requirements for information technology equipment. The notification further clarifies that USB Type External Hard Disk Drives shall continue to be regulated under the existing notified provisions. However, all other standalone hard disk drives will become subject to the requirements of the Compulsory Registration Order, 2021 with effect from 05.11.2026. The amendment has been issued in public interest and forms part of the continuing revisions to the 2021 regulatory framework.

Subject: Amendment to the “Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021”
S.O. 2204(E).—In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) and (2) of section 16 read with sub section (3) of section 25 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, (11 of 2016), the Central Government is of the opinion that it is necessary or expedient so to do in the public interest, hereby makes the following amendments to the “Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021”:
The entry at Column 2 of S. No. 50 in the Schedule of the “Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021 shall be substituted as “Standalone Hard Disk Drives”

2. The requirements for USB Type External Hard Disk Drives shall continue to be governed as per the existing notified provisions. For all other standalone HDDs, the provisions of the “Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021” shall apply with effect from 5th November.
