GAIL Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited (GMPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of GAIL (India) Limited, has successfully commissioned a 1.25 million tons per annum (MTPA) Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) manufacturing plant in the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ), Karnataka. The plant, originally established by JBF Petrochemicals Limited (JBPL), was acquired by GAIL in 2023 through the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP), following the approval of the Resolution Plan by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). The commissioning marks the culmination of extensive revival and refurbishment efforts by GAIL, aimed at overcoming significant engineering, technological, and operational challenges.
The successful commissioning of the PTA plant signifies a major milestone in GAIL’s strategic initiative to enhance its presence in the downstream petrochemical sector. This achievement highlights GAIL’s commitment and the collaborative efforts of GMPL’s team, technology partners, consultants, contractors, and other stakeholders. It not only revives an industrial asset but also realises a strategic vision, marking the beginning of a new chapter in GAIL’s petrochemical growth journey.
PTA is an essential raw material used in the production of polyester fibre, yarn, PET resin, and other polyester-based products, which have extensive applications in the textile, apparel, and packaging industries. With the new facility’s capacity of 1.25 MTPA, GMPL is set to significantly contribute to India’s domestic PTA manufacturing capacity. This is expected to bolster the domestic availability of this critical raw material, reduce import dependence, and support the growth of India’s downstream polyester industry. The plant’s strategic location near New Mangalore Port, coupled with dedicated logistics infrastructure, ensures efficient movement of raw materials and finished products. GAIL plans to market the product under the brand name ‘G-Tex’, leveraging its established marketing network and customer reach.
Analysts view this development as a strategic move that could enhance GAIL’s competitive position in the petrochemical market, potentially driving growth and profitability in the coming years. The increased domestic production of PTA could also provide a significant boost to related industries, fostering economic growth and reducing reliance on imports.
