The Government of India’s Notification No. 19 (RE-98)/1997-02, dated September 9, 1998, amends Chapter 84 of the ITC(HS) Classifications of Export and Import Items for the period 1997-2002. The amendment restricts the import of computer systems, including personal computers, with a CIF value below Rs 70,000. These items can only be imported with a Special Import License (SIL) or as per a Public Notice issued for this purpose. The notification emphasizes that the import of such computers is subject to a licensing requirement, thereby controlling their entry into the country. This amendment is issued in the public interest and aims to regulate the import of lower-cost computer systems.
