T. Prabhakar Rao Vs The State of Telangana (Supreme Court of India)
The case concerns a criminal proceeding arising from Crime No.243 of 2024 registered at Panjagutta Police Station, Hyderabad, for offences under Sections 166, 409, 427, 201 and 120(B) read with Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code, Section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984 and Sections 65, 66, 66(F)(1)(B)(2) and 70 of the Information Technology Act, 2000. The prosecution case originated from a complaint lodged on 10.03.2024 by the Additional Superintendent of Police, Special Investigation Branch (SIB), Telangana, alleging disappearance and destruction of physical and electronic intelligence records.

According to the complaint, a police officer working in SIB allegedly used official computer systems, storage devices and internet connectivity to develop profiles of individuals and monitor them clandestinely. It was alleged that records were copied into personal drives and later destroyed. The complaint also stated that on 04.12.2023 CCTV cameras were switched off and hard disks containing intelligence data collected over several years were removed and replaced, resulting in destruction of sensitive information. Based on this complaint, the police registered the case and later filed a charge sheet alleging conspiracy among several accused persons, including the petitioner.
