Recently I came across a video of well-known spiritual personality Sadguru. The topic of the video was what is important? Sleep or Rest? In the said video he explained beautifully what actually human beings need? After watching the video, I reflected upon the said subject and started working on it. So, this article is the result of the said video plus my own experience. Let’s dive into…
For a common man like us, Sleep means no physical activity with eyes closed. We can’t say that our mind is also sleeping. It’s never. Whereas Rest means to us is not sleeping with eyes closed but any relaxing position we took. So, certainly ninety nine percent of people would say sleep is more important and necessary than resting.
Many of us experience in the life quantitative sleep than quality of sleep. What does it mean? It means many of us have disturbed night sleep. And that goes beyond seven or eight plus hours. Which actually deplete our productivity rather than increase in productivity. We have a pre-occupied notion that more hours of sleep means more relaxation of the body physically as well as mentally. But that is not true. What our body physically and mentally requires is a sufficient amount of REST than SLEEP.
If we see, whenever we are sitting idle and not doing anything, our body physically gets the Rest. We all experience many of such incidences of Resting in a day i.e. physical as well as mental Rest. So, if we count off those and really focus on Rest than Sleep, then we can gradually adapt to lesser hours of Sleep and can move towards quality Sleep.
What I started doing after the said video is to identify the areas where I can physically as well as mentally get the Rest. And that part I am equating to Sleep. As a result of this approx one to two hours of Sleep is reduced from my usual six to seven hours of sleep. Now I can Sleep for four to five hours a day and even become more energetic and productive.
So, let’s start applying the REST principle in your LIFE. It’s a Magic Stick in your hand!
