The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) will train accounting technicians at Abu Dhabi from next year and is in a process of signing memorandum of understandings (MOUs) with several countries in the coming months in this connection. These were some of the developments shared by ICAI president CA Amarjit Chopra, who presided over the convocation ceremony of ICAI here on Monday. Chopra also hinted that in a bid to foster transparency, they may start showing answer sheets to students if the council approves.

Chopra during the convocation conferred the membership credentials on over 100 CAs from across the state. “We have decided to rotate the centre for hosting convocations. This time it was Vadodara, next year it may take place in Ahmedabad with other cities in the state too getting to host it. It is for the first time this event is held in Gujarat,” Chopra said.

Talking about the initiatives taken up by ICAI, Chopra spoke about various MOUs they are planning to sign with foreign countries. “We will be signing one with Ireland next month. As per the MOU, our students get to practice in their country and vice-versa. Other countries with which we are in talks are Australia, Canada and New Zealand,” Chopra added.

As part of fulfilling global social obligation, ICAI has agreed to train accounting technicians at Abu Dhabi. “A MOU was signed in which ICAI will prepare the course and conduct it at the Centre of Excellence for Applied Research and Training. The course will be of one year duration and we are expecting to start it from January next year with initial intake of 50 students,” Chopra told.

Throwing light on the reforms to be brought in for aspiring and present CA students, Chopra said, “The exam system will be strengthened and revamped. Focus will now be more on application than cramming the notes and taking examination. We are also making all the process online for students so that they can make payments sitting at their homes. ICAI will also start virtual classroom project from December,” Chopra shared.
