The Supreme Court has ruled in the case of Tameshwar Vaishanav vs Ramvishal Gupta that if the payee or the holder of the cheque does not file a complaint of dishonour within the prescribed time, he cannot issue a second notice and then file a complaint again. Notice with respect to a cheque can be issued only once. The deadline or limitation starts from the date of the first notice.

Starting Thursday, Delhi shifted to a 5% Value Added Tax (VAT) slab from 4%. The shift to the 5% slab will impact the prices of medicines, surgical and medical equipment, IT and electronic products like computers and software, and industrial inputs, among other things. The five percent slab will cover 170-odd items.

The auditor for Bharti Airtel has asked for more time from the department of telecommunications (DoT) to finalise the special report sought by the government on the company, as they have yet to fully get the needed information. Contractor, Nayak & Kishnadwada, the chosen audit agency, has told DoT in a letter that Bharti has started providing some of the pending information, which is being verified.

Assignee of a policy holder would be liable for deficiency in service if an insurance policy lapsed as a result of non-payment of premium in time, the National Consumer Commission has held. The apex consumer body held the Employment Provident Fund Commissioner (EPFC) responsible for deficient service for failing to deposit the premium of a policy holder to the LIC in time, which led to repudiation of claim by the company.
