Amongst the more celebrated works of Khalil Gibran, “The Prophet”, is one of the most translated as well as one of the bestselling books of all time. First published in 1923, it has never been out of print! Amongst the twenty-six prose/poetry/fables in the book, the section titled, ‘Work’ is amongst my favorites. A passage that particularly resonates is:
Work is love made visible…
..For if you bake bread with indifference, you bake a bitter bread that feeds but half man’s hunger.
When we put our heart, soul and passion into our work, it is elevated to a far higher plane and that by itself enriches the quality of our output. It is important that we work with empathy so that the fruit of our labour provides succor to those whom we serve – in our case, the taxpayer.
Moving ahead, last week, CBIC received an ‘Award of Recognition’ from the Maldives Customs Service in appreciation of our assistance. Such international encomiums are an affirmation of the breadth and depth of our engagement with our partner Customs administrations and of our capabilities. My congratulations to the entire CBIC family for their individual and collective effort in this regard!
On the anti-evasion front, the week gone by saw a case detected by Commissionerate of Central Goods & Services Tax, Alwar, involving evasion of GST on the basis of misclassification of specified parts of engines as articles of iron and steel.
The tax evaded amounted to more than Rs. Eleven Crore. In the course of the investigations the entire amount evaded along with applicable interest, total amounting to more than Rs. Fifteen Crore was recovered. My Sincere Congratulations to the officers for an excellent detection.
