Tickets for entertainment programmes and cricket matches would be costlier in rural areas of Maharashtra as the state government today decided to levy 10 per cent entertainment tax.

“The government is introducing 10 per cent entertainment tax outside areas of Municipal Corporations and Municipal Councils,” Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said after a cabinet meeting.

The decision would add Rs 40-45 lakh to the exchequer every year, Chavan said.

The entertainment tax was so far levied only within the limits of Municipal Corporations and Municipal Councils under the Mumbai Entertainment Tax Ordinance 1923.
