HDFC Mid Cap Fund Current Name Mandate Portfolio TER Exit Load Risk and Tax

Summary : HDFC Mid Cap Fund is an open-ended equity scheme that invests predominantly in mid-cap companies. It is the current name of HDFC Mid-Cap Opportunities Fund; HDFC Mutual Fund changed the name with effect from 27 June 2025 without creating a new underlying scheme. The scheme’s stated objective is long-term capital appreciation or income through investment predominantly in mid-cap companies, but achievement is not assured. Its benchmark is the NIFTY Midcap 150 Total Return Index, and the official product label places the scheme in the Very High risk category. The September 2026 factsheet reported assets under management of ₹101,856.06 crore, a portfolio led by Federal Bank, AU Small Finance Bank, Max Financial Services, Ipca Laboratories and Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, and base expense ratios of 1.26 per cent for the Regular Plan and 0.71 per cent for the Direct Plan as at 30 September 2026. A later AMC notice reduced the Direct Plan base expense ratio to 0.60 per cent from 16 October 2026; base expense ratio is not necessarily identical to the final daily TER. The exit load is one per cent for redemption or switch-out within one year of allotment and nil thereafter. This article explains the mandate, portfolio concentration, plan choices, costs, taxation and operational checks without ranking or recommending the scheme.

Current Scheme Identity and 2025 Name Change

The AMC’s addendum dated 19 June 2025 changed the name from HDFC Mid-Cap Opportunities Fund to HDFC Mid Cap Fund with effect from 27 June 2025. It expressly stated that other scheme terms and conditions remained unchanged. The rename should therefore not be treated as a new fund launch or used to reset the scheme’s history. Official materials continue to show an inception date of 25 June 2007.

Mid Cap Mandate and Portfolio Construction

The scheme follows a predominantly mid-cap strategy and is required to maintain at least sixty-five per cent exposure to mid-cap stocks under the category framework. It may use other equity and equity-related securities to construct the portfolio. Mid-cap classification is regulatory and can change as market capitalisation rankings are updated. A company entering or leaving the mid-cap universe can require portfolio adjustment even when the investment team’s fundamental view has not changed.

The objective refers to long-term capital appreciation or income, but it is not a capital guarantee. Mid-cap businesses may have narrower product lines, lower liquidity, greater dependence on promoters or key customers and less access to financing than larger companies. Their shares can also experience wider bid-ask spreads and sharper drawdowns. A large scheme may need more time or a broader set of holdings to deploy or redeem capital without materially affecting market prices.

September 2026 Portfolio Snapshot

The official September factsheet reported 91.71 per cent in equity and equity-related holdings and 8.29 per cent in cash, cash equivalents and net current assets. Banks were the largest disclosed industry allocation at 15.38 per cent, followed by pharmaceuticals and biotechnology at 12.14 per cent, auto components at 9.55 per cent and information-technology software at 7.15 per cent. These are dated observations, not permanent limits.

Holding at 30 September 2026 Industry Share of NAV
The Federal Bank Ltd. Banks 3.98%
AU Small Finance Bank Ltd. Banks 3.94%
Max Financial Services Ltd. Insurance 3.52%
Ipca Laboratories Ltd. Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology 3.43%
Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology 3.07%
Balkrishna Industries Ltd. Auto Components 2.98%
Indian Bank Banks 2.92%
Coforge Ltd. IT Software 2.68%

Portfolio percentages should be read as of the stated date. They can change through purchases, sales, corporate actions, valuation movements or changes in total net assets. Mention of a security is not a recommendation to buy or sell that security, and an investor should use the latest monthly portfolio before forming a current concentration view.

Benchmark Riskometer and Measurement Limits

The scheme benchmark is the NIFTY Midcap 150 TRI. A total-return index assumes reinvestment of distributions, making it more appropriate than a price-only index for performance comparison. The scheme’s Very High riskometer communicates the assessed risk level under the regulatory methodology; it does not estimate the maximum possible loss. Market, liquidity, concentration, valuation, governance and execution risks can still produce outcomes materially different from the benchmark.

The September factsheet reported a three-year standard deviation of 16.118 per cent, beta of 0.824 and Sharpe ratio of 0.604 using the stated methodology and risk-free rate. These are historical, period-dependent statistics. They are not a forecast and can change substantially when the measurement window or market regime changes. The benchmark is a comparison tool, not a portfolio constraint that forces identical holdings or weights.

Regular and Direct Plans Growth and IDCW Options

The scheme offers Regular and Direct Plans, each with Growth and Income Distribution cum Capital Withdrawal options. The underlying portfolio is common, but the expense structure differs because a Regular Plan may include distribution-related costs while a Direct Plan does not pay distributor commission in the same manner. This difference leads to separate NAVs. A Direct Plan is not automatically suitable for every investor; it assumes the investor can select, transact and monitor the scheme without distribution advice.

Growth retains gains within the scheme’s NAV. IDCW permits distributions only when declared and subject to available distributable surplus; it is not interest and is not assured. An IDCW payout reduces the NAV to the extent of the distribution and applicable adjustments. Investors comparing options should examine cash-flow need, taxation and the possibility that a distribution includes a return of part of the investor’s own capital.

Expense Ratio Notices and Exit Load

The September 2026 factsheet disclosed base expense ratios, including statutory levies forming part of BER but excluding brokerage, transaction cost and execution-related statutory levies, of 1.26 per cent for the Regular Plan and 0.71 per cent for the Direct Plan as at 30 September 2026. An AMC notice dated 9 October 2026 reduced the Direct Plan BER from 0.61 per cent to 0.60 per cent with effect from 16 October 2026. The notice concerns BER; investors should not substitute it mechanically for the current total expense ratio, which can include other permitted components and is disclosed separately on the AMC website.

Cost item Published position Practical reading
Regular Plan BER 1.26% at 30 September 2026 factsheet date Dated disclosure; verify the current daily TER
Direct Plan BER 0.71% at 30 September 2026; later notice sets BER at 0.60% from 16 October The notice and factsheet use different effective dates; do not combine them
Exit load 1% for redemption or switch-out within one year; nil after one year Each purchase or SIP instalment has its own allotment date
Entry load Not applicable Transaction and platform costs may still exist outside the scheme

An exit load is deducted from the redemption value; it is not a lock-in. Units can generally be redeemed during the one-year period subject to the load, processing rules and exceptional restrictions allowed by law. For SIPs, each instalment is a separate allotment for determining the one-year period. A switch to another scheme is normally a redemption from the existing scheme and can trigger both exit load and tax.

Subscription Redemption and Investor Operations

The AMC product page states a minimum application and SIP amount of ₹100, with purchases available through AMC or registrar points, online channels, exchange platforms, MF Central and authorised intermediaries. The applicable NAV depends on valid application, cut-off time and realisation of funds under mutual-fund rules. KYC, PAN, bank validation, nominee or opt-out information and beneficial-ownership requirements must be complete. A failed mandate or late fund realisation can shift the applicable NAV date.

Redemption proceeds are paid to the registered bank account after validation. Investors should keep folio, bank and contact details current. Transmission, change of bank, lien, pledge, frozen folio, unclaimed proceeds or death of a holder can require additional documents. Complaints should first be raised with HDFC AMC or its registrar and can then be escalated through SEBI’s SCORES platform or the applicable dispute-resolution process.

Indian Tax Treatment for Equity Fund Units

HDFC Mid Cap Fund is ordinarily treated as an equity-oriented fund when it satisfies the statutory equity-investment condition. For transfers on or after 23 July 2024, current guidance generally taxes short-term capital gains under section 111A at twenty per cent when the relevant conditions, including securities transaction tax, are met. Long-term capital gains under section 112A are generally taxed at twelve and one-half per cent on aggregate qualifying gains exceeding ₹1.25 lakh in a financial year. Surcharge, cess and special taxpayer rules can modify the final liability.

A switch between plans, options or schemes can be a taxable transfer even when no cash reaches the investor. IDCW is generally taxable in the investor’s hands at the applicable slab rate, with TDS potentially applying under the relevant threshold and status rules. Capital losses require correct classification and timely return filing for carry-forward. Investors should use the AMC capital-gains statement and independent records rather than calculating tax only from bank credits.
