Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited has announced that its drug UNLOXCYT® (cosibelimab-ipdl) has been granted a Category 2A preferred designation in the updated National Comprehensive Cancer Network® (NCCN®) guidelines. This designation applies to patients with locally advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (laCSCC) who are not candidates for curative surgery or radiation. The announcement marks a significant milestone for Sun Pharma, as it reflects the growing confidence among oncology experts in UNLOXCYT’s efficacy as a treatment option for this challenging disease.

UNLOXCYT was previously approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2024 for the treatment of adults with metastatic or locally advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma who are not candidates for curative surgery or radiation. The drug is administered as a 1,200 mg intravenous infusion over 60 minutes every three weeks. It is the first and only FDA-approved PD-L1-blocking antibody for advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (aCSCC).

The evidence supporting the NCCN’s updated recommendation was based on a pivotal registration study, which demonstrated that 55% of patients achieved an objective response, including 26% who achieved a complete response. The responses were durable, with a median follow-up of 24.1 months, and the median duration of response had not been reached. Additionally, fewer than 1% of patients experienced high-grade immune-mediated adverse reactions, an important consideration for the often elderly and medically complex patient population.

The NCCN guidelines are highly influential in cancer care, providing evidence-based recommendations to help clinicians make informed treatment decisions. The updated designation for UNLOXCYT is expected to have a meaningful impact on patient access, as the guidelines inform payer coverage policies and clinical pathways. Analysts suggest that this development could enhance Sun Pharma’s position in the oncology market, particularly in the treatment of advanced skin cancers, as it continues to build on its established leadership in dermatology.
