Vedanta Limited, a major player in the global metals and mining industry, has announced a significant expansion of its zinc production capacity in South Africa. The company has invested approximately US$ 600 million to double its annual production capacity to 500,000 tonnes at its Gamsberg operations in the Northern Cape province. This expansion, which marks one of the largest mining investments in South Africa this decade, was inaugurated by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Vedanta Limited Director Priya Agarwal-Hebbar.
The Gamsberg mine, known for its substantial zinc deposits, is a flagship operation for Vedanta Zinc International (VZI). The expansion is a step towards Vedanta’s ambitious goal of producing 3 million tonnes of zinc annually across its operations in India and South Africa. Hindustan Zinc Limited, a subsidiary of Vedanta and the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, aims to contribute 2 million tonnes, while VZI targets 1 million tonnes annually.
Zinc is increasingly vital for modern industrial and infrastructure development, primarily due to its role in galvanizing steel to prevent corrosion. Vedanta’s expansion aligns with the growing global demand for zinc, strengthening its position in the market. The investment is part of a larger ZAR 21 billion commitment made by Vedanta at the 2018 South Africa Investment Conference, reflecting the strengthening economic ties between India and South Africa.
President Ramaphosa praised the investment, highlighting its transition from commitment to production and its potential to establish zinc smelting capacity in the region. Priya Agarwal-Hebbar emphasised Vedanta’s commitment to South Africa’s future, aiming to create a globally significant zinc and industrial hub. Beyond its industrial impact, Vedanta has invested nearly USD 20 million in South African community initiatives since 2011, benefiting over 32,000 people annually.
Analysts view this expansion as a strategic move to capture a larger share of the zinc market amid rising demand. Vedanta’s focus on sustainability and community development further enhances its reputation as a responsible corporate entity, potentially attracting more investors interested in ethical and sustainable business practices.
