Dear Colleagues,
Greetings to all of you on the first GST Day celebrations! Today is an important milestone, when the momentous journey from the GST formulation to implementation has completed a year. It is indeed a privilege to assume office on the eve of the day which is of paramount importance for indirect tax administration in the country, transforming the country into “One Nation, One Tax, One Market”.
The journey has been arduous but the outcome is remarkable and historic. We faced challenges as we moved on our journey, but all of you have demonstrated exemplary abilities to overcome every challenge with success. I would like to compliment each one of you for the commendable work in the formulation, implementation and execution of this historic reform. I would urge all of you to continue to work with even greater zeal, commitment and integrity as we need to take the levels of taxpayer service and the ease of doing business to newer heights.
Tax administrations world over have gone through a complete makeover from being regulators to facilitators to partners in reform. There is a need to strike a fine balance between facilitation and compliance management in the cross border trade. Let us continually and collectively address the IT, Operational, and HR issues to make us a modern Customs administration.
On behalf of all my colleagues in the Board, I take this opportunity to assure you of our relentless effort towards staff welfare, infrastructure development and HR management. I would also take this opportunity to convey our gratitude and best wishes to the outgoing Chairman Ms. Vanaja N. Sarna, whose much anticipated and appreciated weekly newsletter, I intend to continue. My wishes are also due to my colleague Shri Raj Kumar Barthwal, who joins as Member of the Board with his rich experience and expertise in the Indirect tax administration.

Sir, request you to revisit 18% GST levied on member’s share of common expenses in a Hsg. Society as it is paid from Tax paid income. Please advise GST Council in the next meeting on 21 July 2018 to exempt Hsg. Socs from 18% GST as there was no Service Tax. Hsg. Socs operate on principles of mutuality and are not business enterprises.
