DO No. 11/News Letter/CH(IC)/2023 Dated: 16th October, 2023

Dear colleague,

I would start this week’s newsletter with the delightful news of the promotion of 532 officers to the grade of Assistant Commissioner against the temporary posts in the department created as a result of the cadre restructuring. As you are aware, 1107 officers were promoted in the month of January and 682 were promoted in the month of July. With this latest promotion order, the number of officers who got promoted to the grade of Assistant Commissioner in the present calendar year stands at 2321. Now there is no backlog in promotions from Group ‘B’ to Group ‘Al

Now the Cadre Controlling Authorities need to keep pace and make sure that the vacancies created are also taken up for filling by promoting officers down the ladder. The more we direct our efforts towards improved human resource management, the more motivated workforce we shall create.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence is on a run against gold smuggling syndicates. In the past week, DRI carried out multiple operations, intercepting and seizing around 60 kilograms of gold, smuggled through land, air and coastal route for consumption in clandestine melting units located in different parts of the country. During the operations, a total cash of Rs. 7.32 Crore in foreign currency and Indian currency were also recovered and 25 persons involved in the smuggling were apprehended. The officers merit appreciation for their meticulous planning and precision in execution.

I am elated to see sincere efforts being made as a part of the ongoing Special Campaign 3.0. Some formations have taken this opportunity to strengthen the fight against narcotics by the destruction of seized contraband. Recently, Mumbai Airport Customs Commissionerate carried out the destruction of 3700 Kgs of illegally imported Cigarettes, Tobacco and e-Cigarettes, seized and confiscated from passengers at Mumbai Airport. Similar action was taken by Hyderabad Customs where seized narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances weighing 216.69 Kgs valued at Rs. 468 Crores and 40 lakh seized cigarette sticks valued at Rs. 4 Crore were incinerated. Customs formations at Cochin, Kolkata and Ludhiana also did remarkable work by disposing substantial quantities of seized drugs, cigarettes, etc. Ludhiana Customs freed around 1000 sq. ft. of office space in this process. I am confident that the good work done will set a shining example for all of us. Remember the following words by the distinguished writer, Munshi Premchand:

“Good fortune is achieved only by those who remain steady on the path of their duty”

Till next week!

Yours sincerely,

(Sanjay Kumar Agarwal)
