Kanpur, May 11 (PTI) Over 17,000 plastic pouches of gutka being sold illegally were recovered during a drive carried out by district municipal corporation authorities here, officials said today.
The corporation carried out the drive yesterday after receiving repeated complaints regarding selling of gutka in plastic pouches despite the Apex court’s order, Municipal Commissioner R Vikram Singh said.
Singh added that gutka being sold in new paper pouches were also seized as the pollution control board had not given its nod for the same till now.
Saying that the drive will be carried on, Singh assured that all steps would be taken to ensure that gutka in plastic pouches were not being sold.
The Supreme Court in December last year had ordered a complete ban on plastic gutka pouches.
