The Designated Court at Kolkata has remanded three days police custody to A M Sahay, Commissioner of Central Excise, Kolkata-II Commissionarate and two private persons in a bribery case yesterday. In this case, the CBI has arrested seven accused i.e. three at Kolkata and four at Mumbai. The Competent Court at Mumbai has given two days transit remand to four accused yesterday.

  A case was registered on the basis of reliable information alleging that the Commissioner of Central Excise, Kolkata-II Commissionarate entered into a criminal conspiracy for attempting to obtain illegal gratification for favouring Owners(the Father & Son) of a private firm based in Kolkata in an enquiry initiated by the Central Excise Department, Kolkata-II Commissionarate on the basis of some adverse reference received from the Vigilance Department of Railway Design & Supply Organization, Lucknow. It was further alleged that the Commissioner attempted to obtain an amount of Rs.50 lakhs in Mumbai through a Hawala transaction. A trap was laid and the bribe amount being paid through Hawala transactions at both ends were seized by the CBI. A total amount of Rs.1,03,99,000/-(approx) has allegedly been recovered related to the transaction.

            Searches were conducted in the residential premises of the Commissioner and other accused persons. Documents relating to investment in flats, shares, FDs and details of bank accounts recovered during searches are being scrutinized for further investigation.

            Further investigation is continuing.
