THREE YEARS RIGOROUS IMPRISONMENT WITH FINE OF RS. 50,000/- TO THEN DEPUTY COMMISSIONER OF CENTRAL EXCISE IN DISPROPORTIONATE ASSETS CASE

The Special Judge for CBI cases, Chennai has convicted Shri A. Ashokan then Deputy Commissioner of Central Excise in a disproportionate assets case and sentenced him to undergo 3 years Rigorous Imprisonment with fine of Rs. 50,000/-. The Court has also ordered for confiscation of disproportionate assets of Rs. 12,72,961/- to the State. CBI had registered and investigated the case against Shri A. Ashokan, Deputy Commissioner of Central Excise  on the allegations that during the check period 01.9.1989 to 19.01.1998 while working as public servant in various capacities, he  acquired assets to the tune of Rs.21,40,140/- in his name and in the name of  his wife which was disproportionate to the extent of 87.74% against  his known sources of income and  expenditure incurred by him.

On completion of investigation, CBI filed chargesheet against Shri A. Ashokan and his wife under sections 120 B of IPC r/w 13(2)r/w 13(1)(e) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The Trial Court found Sh. A. Ashokan guilty and acquitted his wife from the case.

CBI ARRESTS A SUPERINTENDENT OF CENTRAL EXCISE IN  BRIBERY CASE

In the second case, the CBI has arrested a Superintendent of Central Excise in Mumbai for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 5000/- from the complainant.

A case was registered U/s 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 on the allegations that the Superintendent of Central Excise in Mumbai demanded a bribe of Rs.10,000/- from the complainant for renewal of Bond of his company which was reduced to Rs.6000/-. The demand was further reduced to Rs. 5000/-. CBI laid a trap and the accused was caught red handed while accepting a bribe of Rs.5000/- from the complainant. Searches were conducted in the office & residence of the accused in Mumbai which led to recovery of  incriminating documents relating to case and also additional cash amount of Rs.48700/- was found in 10 different envelops lying in official files.
