On July 17, 2024, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a Superintendent of Customs from the Courier Cell at Sahar Airport, Mumbai, for accepting a bribe of Rs. 80,000. The arrest followed an investigation into allegations that the officer demanded a bribe to clear a consignment of machine parts imported from China, which was subject to an anti-dumping duty of approximately Rs. 2,80,000. Initially demanding Rs. 1,40,000, the bribe amount was later negotiated down to Rs. 80,000. The CBI caught the accused red-handed during a sting operation and conducted a search at his residence in Navi Mumbai. The accused was presented in court and remanded to three days of police custody. The investigation is ongoing.

CBI ARRESTS A SUPDT. OF CUSTOMS, SAHAR AIRPORT, MUMBAI IN A CASE RELATED TO ACCEPTANCE OF Rs 80,000/- BRIBE FROM COMPLAINANT

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Supdt. of Customs, Courier Cell, International Courier Terminal, Mumbai for demanding and acceptance of Rs 80,000/- bribe from the complainant.

A case was registered by CBI against accused Supdt. of Customs posted at Courier Cell, International Courier Terminal, Sahar, Andheri East, Mumbai on allegations that the complainant had imported some machine part from China, which reached Mumbai International Courier Terminal on 06.07.2024 through a Courier firm. It was also alleged that when complainant met accused, he told complainant that he had to pay anti-dumping duty of Rs. 2,80,000/- (approx.) for release of the consignment imported by him. Thereafter, the accused Supdt. allegedly asked the complainant to pay him an undue advantage of Rs.1,40,000/- i.e. 50% value of the anti-dumping duty and assured him that if he pays him the above amount, he would clear the consignment without payment of anti-dumping duty of Rs. 2,80,000/-. It was further alleged that on showing inability to pay Rs.1,40,000/- as undue advantage by the complainant, the accused Supdt. of Customs reduced the amount to Rs. 1.00 lakh. After negotiations the accused further reduced alleged demand of undue advantage to Rs. 80,000/-.

CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red handed while accepting the undue advantage of Rs. 80,000/- from the complainant at his office. Thereafter, accused was arrested by the CBI.

Search was conducted by CBI at the residential premises of accused situated at Ulwe, Navi Mumbai.

The arrested accused was produced before the Competent Court, Mumbai today i.e. on 17.07.2024 and has been remanded to three days police custody.

Investigation is continuing.
