The Government of India, through the Department of Consumer Affairs, has issued a public consultation notice dated 1 January 2026 inviting stakeholder comments on the draft Legal Metrology (Government Approved Test Centre) Amendment Rules, 2026. The draft amendments propose expanding the scope of the existing 2013 Rules by including additional categories of weights and measures—specifically petrol/diesel, CNG, LPG, LNG, and hydrogen dispensers—within the list of instruments that can be verified and calibrated by Government Approved Test Centres. Corresponding verification fees per nozzle have also been proposed, ranging from ₹5,000 for petrol/diesel dispensers to ₹10,000 for gas and hydrogen dispensers. Stakeholders have been given one month to submit comments via designated email addresses. Once notified in the Official Gazette, the amended rules will come into force immediately. The proposal reflects the government’s intent to strengthen regulatory oversight, accuracy, and standardisation in fuel and energy dispensing systems.
