A chartered accountant working for Himanshu Sabharwal, son of Ujjain Professor H.S. Sabharwal who died after a fracas between students on the campus three years ago, was found stabbed to death under mysterious circumstances at the Delhi University’s North Campus on Thursday.
Thirty-two-year- old Parminder Singh was found in a pool of blood by a police patrol team near the Khalsa College on Mall Road at night. An identity card was found in his wallet.
Singh was apparently waylaid while returning home on a motorcycle around midnight after pasting posters on the campus calling for a candle-light vigil at the India Gate on Sunday to seek justice for Professor Sabharwal.
All six accused in the case of Professor Sabharwal were acquitted by a court on July 13 for lack of evidence.
Ramkumar, Singh’s brother-in-law, said on Friday morning that the family learnt about the incident around 2.30 a.m. “It was only on reaching the Sushruta Trauma Centre that we came to know he was murdered. There were stab wounds on the neck and the abdomen. There was also a deep slash on the head and his eyes were wide open,” he said.
The police found some cash, credit cards and a gold chain left untouched, though his mobile phone was missing.
Robbery bid suspected
Based on preliminary investigations, the police suspect that Singh may have been murdered during a robbery attempt. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sagar Preet Hooda said “We are probing all possible angles.”
The murder took place a few minutes after Sabharwal dropped Singh and Ramjas College Students’ Union secretary Saif outside the Law Faculty around 11 p.m. and left for Hauz Khas in his car along with a freelance journalist.
Speaking on behalf of his clients, Supreme Court lawyer Joginder Tuli said, “All four had met earlier in the day and reached the North Campus in the evening to paste posters for the proposed vigil. After the job was done, Sabharwal dropped Singh and Saif and left with Pooja in his car. Singh had parked his motorcycle at the Law Faculty.”
Singh is survived by his wife and a three-year-old daughter.
