Vivek Johri, Chairman

DO No. 69/CH(IC)/2022  Dated: 29th March, 2023

“Forward, the Light Brigade!”; Was there a man dismayed?
When can their glory fade?; 0 the wild charge they made!
Honour the charge they made!; Honour the Light Brigade

I was reminded of these words from Tennyson’s Charge of the Light Brigade, at a poignant event organized by CGST Zone, Delhi to remember our colleagues and innumerable others who laid down their lives in the line of duty during the Corona pandemic.

They stood true to their duty so that the wheels of the economy keep turning; they continued their work often in the face of impossible odds so as to ensure that the supply of essential items – medicines, oxygen generators and other critical equipment reach where they were needed, in time or so that critical working capital of taxpayers is not blocked owing to delay in GST refunds.

They are the light that shone in the darkness, the hope that sprang eternal, and the courage that knew no bounds. They are the ones who remind us that there is no greater love than the love for one’s duty and no greater path than ……. Their memory is a call to action, a call to duty and most of all to never give up in the face of adversity. They put their all on the line, so that we could get through a difficult time.

As we honour them, let us also remember their sacrifice, not for a moment or a day but forever, and pledge to continue the fight for a better world, a better tomorrow. Let us also strive to build an organization, a society and a country that is worthy of the ideals espoused by them.

Moving on, e-Yachika, a web based facility for online filing of appeals with Commissioner (Appeals), Delhi Customs Zone, was inaugurated last week. This initiative will lead to further ease of doing business for the trade and will enhance the speed of disposal of Appeals. Kudos to Chief Commissioner, Delhi Customs Zone and her team of officers for their excellent initiative.

Our ongoing efforts to bolster departmental infrastructure along the Borders received a significant fillip last week with the inauguration of a Residential Quarters Complex at Land Customs Station (LCS), Jogbani. This will benefit officers posted at the LCS and help boost their productivity. Congratulations to Chief Commissioner Customs (Preventive) Zone, Patna and his team of officers for their diligence in seeing the project to fruition.

On the anti-smuggling side, the week gone by saw officers of Chennai Airport Customs, interdict two arriving passengers who were attempting to smuggle a De Braza Monkey, a Mantled Guereza and two Spider Monkeys. The animals were rescued and deported back to their originating country. Congratulations to the officers for an excellent detection.

Before I sign off for the week, I would like our field formations to make all out efforts to maximize revenue collections in the last week of the Financial Year. They may like to analyze available data for better targeted interventions as well as focus on areas such as ensuring expeditious clearances and pursuing recoveries in ripe cases.

Till next week!

Yours Sincerely,

(Vivek Johri)
