Dear AajTak Team,

Kudos to your team for identifying (presumably) a professional with not so strong ethics.  I have very consciously used the word ‘presumably’ because the footage shown is yet to be tested and the correctness of the same is still to be established.

Wondering why I am writing this letter so late? I am writing because news covered in the TOI’s (04.12.2016) prompted me to do so. The link is given below:

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chandigarh/Murthal-gang-rapes-Two-witnesses-cooked-up-proof/articleshow/55781668.cms

The link shows how a JOURNALIST cooked up a fake story just to get some TRP’s/personal benefit….AND ITS NOT A SIMLPLE FAKE STORY THAT WAS TRIED TO BE COOKED….IT WAS FABRICATION OF A RAPE CASE…… Is this the level of ethics in journalism?

PLEASE NOTE THAT I AM CONSCIOUSLY NOT USING PRESUMABLY BECAUSE IN THE JOURNALIST CASE (LINK ABOVE) FABRICATION IS ESTABLISHED FACTUALLY AND SUBMITTED BEFORE THE HON’BLE PUNJAB & HARYANA HIGH COURT.

Should I also paint the entire journalists profession with the same brush just because of this incident? My answer would be no? One has to understand that it’s not the profession which is good or bad rather the persons are and this is the reason why ANY profession is surviving since decades.

Having said the above, I would expect you (as I believe that you people are true to your profession) to cover the above cooking up case with the same zeal on your channels. If possible request your fellow journalists / channels also to cover the same.

Should I suggest a heading for the coverage? It can be something like ‘Journalists cooking up story for benefits’ or any other heading which is more apt.

The intention of writing this letter is not to degrade any profession or to hurt anyone. It’s only to make you understand that it hurts when the entire profession is painted with the same brush without any fault.

I was not hurt by the coverage of the news but by the way the coverage was done. Expecting (and requesting) you to do the future coverage of any news more professionally.

Thanks,

CA Ashish Karundia

No, we cannot and should not paint all journalists in the same hue and colour. But, as professionals, we should ask ourselves, are we being true to our profession? This applies not only to journalists, but to accounts, doctors and lawyers too. Has our country become so weak morally that anyone can be bought for a few more rupees?
