The case had been registered in April 2010 against Sumitra Banerji, Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, for demanding a bribe of Rs 2 crore from a construction firm. According to CBI, during the Income Tax Department’s survey headed by Assistant Commissioner Anjali Bambole at Ram Developers in neighbouring Thane, Banerji threatened one of the partners of the firm that the survey would be turned into `search’, a more serious action, if she was not paid Rs 2 crore. Later, the bribe demand was reduced to Rs 1.5 crore. Banerji’s husband Subroto, a chemical engineer, was arrested while accepting the amount, followed by arrests of Sumitra herself, and Bambole. According to CBI, the three were taking bribes from other builders in Thane using the same method.
