CBI arrests IRS probationer and Superintendent of Central Excise for demanding and accepting bribe

MUMBAI, DEC 09, 2010: THE CBI has nabbed an AC and a Superintendent of Central Excise, Nanded Division (Maharashtra) for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs.18,000/- from the complainant.
Complainant, the Manager of a private company at Latur (Maharashtra) alleged that his company had applied on-line for Central Excise Registration with the Nanded Division of Central Excise in May, 2010. The accused officials had inspected the factory in August, 2010 and were not issuing the certificate. The accused officials demanded an illegal gratification of Rs.18,000/- (Rs.10,000/- for Assistant Commissioner and Rs.8,000/- for the Supdt.) for the same.
On the basis of a complaint lodged with CBI, a case was registered. CBI laid a trap and the Superintendent was caught-red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs.18,000/-. The Assistant Commissioner (a Probationary IRS Officer), was also caught red-handed when he received a bribe of Rs.10,000/- out of Rs.18,000/- from the Superintendent.
Searches were conducted at the residence of the accused officials. Investigation is in progress.
