Mumbai: A 40-year-old man was nabbed by the suburban crime branch for robbing a chartered accountant (CA) at Goregaon (W) recently.Mehul Vora (47) was at work when Rafiq Shaikh and his three aides barged into his office at Jawahar Nagar on June 1. They gagged Vora and threatened him with choppers and revolvers. When his employees tried to intervene, they were beaten up. The accused made away with three mobiles and Rs 1,000. A case was registered at the Goregaon police station.
When the Goregaon police couldn’t make any headway, a parallel probe was carried out by the crime branch. “On June 18, we got a tip-off that a person with a stolen phone was to come near Hanuman temple in Kandivli. A trap was laid and Shaikh was arrested,” said crime branch senior inspector Firoz Patel.
The crime branch officials checked the IMEI number on the handset found with Shaikh. It matched with Vora’s handset. They informed the Goregaon police and handed over Shaikh’s custody to them. Shaikh is a native of UP and has a past criminal record. He has told the cops that the attack on Vora was a case of mistaken identity and that he had planned to target another businessman. Cops are now hunting for Shaikh’s three aides.
