Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited has announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved its supplemental Biologics License Application for ILUMYA® (tildrakizumab-asmn). This approval allows the use of ILUMYA for the treatment of adults with active psoriatic arthritis (PsA), expanding its application beyond its previous indication for moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis.

Rick Ascroft, North America CEO of Sun Pharma, stated that the FDA’s approval marks a significant milestone for the company, enhancing their portfolio in psoriatic disease. ILUMYA, an IL-23 inhibitor, is administered exclusively by healthcare providers, offering an option for adults who cannot self-administer or require regular in-office care. Psoriatic arthritis affects approximately 2.4 million Americans, causing joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, which can lead to permanent joint damage if untreated.

The FDA’s approval is supported by the Phase 3 INSPIRE-1 and INSPIRE-2 clinical studies, which demonstrated the efficacy and safety of ILUMYA after two doses over 24 weeks in adult patients with active psoriatic arthritis. The safety data was consistent with ILUMYA’s well-documented profile, with no new safety signals identified. Common adverse reactions include upper respiratory infections and COVID-19, with patients advised to be evaluated for tuberculosis prior to treatment.

The expansion of ILUMYA’s indications is seen as a valuable addition to the therapeutic options available for psoriatic arthritis, a complex and chronic disease. Philip Mease, Director of Rheumatology Research at the Swedish Medical Center, highlighted the importance of having diverse treatment options to tailor care to individual patient needs. The approval further solidifies Sun Pharma’s position in the innovative medicines sector, with ILUMYA already approved for moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis in multiple countries.

Analysts view this development as a positive step for Sun Pharma, potentially enhancing its market share in the U.S. and globally. The company’s focus on expanding its innovative medicines portfolio is expected to contribute to its growth strategy, especially in the competitive pharmaceutical landscape.
