Scam Alert: Fake Income Tax Penalty Email Targets Taxpayers with 72-Hour Deadline

Taxpayers across the country are reportedly receiving a fraudulent email impersonating the Income Tax Department. The email alleges tax compliance deficiencies, threatens prosecution under the Income-tax Act, and directs recipients to download documents and submit them within 72 hours. The communication appears to be part of a phishing campaign designed to steal sensitive information or lure taxpayers into clicking malicious links.

As cybercriminals become increasingly sophisticated, taxpayers should exercise caution before acting on any email claiming to be from the Income Tax Department. Genuine tax notices can always be independently verified through the official Income Tax e-Filing portal.

What Does the Fraudulent Email Claim?

The email carries the subject “कर अंकेक्षण रिपोर्ट (Tax Audit Report)” and purports to be an Office Memorandum issued by the Income Tax Department. It alleges that tax irregularities have been detected under Section 271(1)(c) of the Income-tax Act, 1961 and instructs recipients to download certain documents and submit them within 72 hours, failing which prosecution under Section 276C is threatened.

At first glance, the email appears official because it contains references to the Government of India, the Ministry of Finance and the Income Tax Department. However, a closer examination reveals several warning signs indicating that it is highly likely to be fraudulent.

Red Flags That Expose the Scam

1. Sent from Unofficial Email Addresses

The email originates from an Outlook.com account and contains a Gmail “Reply-To” address instead of an official government domain. Legitimate communications from the Income Tax Department are not ordinarily sent through free public email services.

2. Unrealistic 72-Hour Deadline

The email demands that taxpayers submit documents within 72 hours, a classic pressure tactic used by scammers to discourage recipients from verifying the authenticity of the communication.

3. Download Link for Documents

Recipients are asked to download documents using a link embedded in the email instead of being directed to the official Income Tax e-Filing portal. Such links may lead to phishing websites or install malicious software.

4. Threat of Criminal Prosecution

The email warns that prosecution under Section 276C will follow if the requested documents are not submitted within the stipulated time. Threatening immediate legal consequences is a common social engineering technique employed by fraudsters.

How to Verify a Genuine Income Tax Notice

Before responding to any tax-related communication:

  • Verify the sender’s email address.
  • Log in directly to the official Income Tax e-Filing portal instead of clicking email links.
  • Check whether the notice is available in your registered e-Filing account.
  • Verify the Document Identification Number (DIN), wherever applicable.
  • Consult your Chartered Accountant or tax advisor if you have any doubts.

Safety Tips for Taxpayers

  • Never click on suspicious links or download unknown attachments.
  • Never share PAN, Aadhaar, passwords, OTPs or banking credentials by email.
  • Never make payments solely because an email threatens penalties or prosecution.
  • Always verify the authenticity of tax notices independently before taking any action.

TaxGuru’s Advisory

Phishing attacks impersonating government departments are becoming increasingly common. Fraudsters frequently use official logos, statutory references and intimidating language to make fake notices appear genuine.

Taxpayers should remain alert and remember one simple rule:

Verify every tax notice through the official Income Tax e-Filing portal before clicking any link, downloading any document or sharing personal information.

A few minutes spent verifying a communication can prevent financial loss, identity theft and malware attacks.
