The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued the RBI (Urban Co-operative Banks – Branch Authorisation) Repeal Directions, 2025 dated December 4, 2025, repealing its earlier Directions issued on November 28, 2025. The RBI stated that the repeal was necessary and expedient in the public interest. The repealed Directions have been replaced by the new RBI (Urban Co-operative Banks – Branch Authorisation) Directions, 2025 issued the same day. Despite the repeal, any action taken or purported to have been taken under the previous Directions continues to be governed by their provisions. All approvals, acknowledgments, rights, obligations, liabilities, penalties, forfeitures, punishments, investigations, legal proceedings, or remedies under the repealed Directions remain valid and enforceable as if the Directions had not been repealed. This ensures continuity and legal protection for actions undertaken under the previous framework while formally introducing the revised Directions for branch authorisation of Urban Co-operative Banks.
