The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), through its circular dated April 10, 2026, has announced the assignment of Lead Bank responsibilities following the creation of two new districts—Polavaram and Markapuram—in the State of Andhra Pradesh. These districts were formed as per state government notifications issued on December 30, 2025. In line with the Lead Bank Scheme, RBI has designated Union Bank of India as the Lead Bank for both newly constituted districts to ensure effective coordination of banking and financial inclusion activities. Additionally, specific district working codes have been allotted, with Polavaram assigned code “02X” and Markapuram assigned code “02Y.” The circular clarifies that there is no change in Lead Bank responsibilities for other districts in Andhra Pradesh. This measure ensures administrative alignment in banking services and supports smooth implementation of district-level financial planning and development initiatives.
