The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), through its circular dated June 3, 2026, assigned Lead Bank responsibility for the newly created district of Bajali in Assam. The Government of Assam had notified the formation of Bajali district on October 11, 2023, and subsequently notified its jurisdictional demarcation on October 21, 2024. Following these developments, RBI designated Canara Bank as the Lead Bank for Bajali district under the Lead Bank Scheme. The newly created district has been allotted District Working Code “01O” (to be read as Numeral Zero, Numeral One, and Alphabet O). The circular clarifies that this assignment is limited to the newly formed district and that there is no change in the Lead Bank responsibilities of any other district in the State of Assam. The directions were issued by RBI on June 3, 2026.

Formation of new district in the State of Assam – Assignment of Lead Bank Responsibility
The Government of Assam (GoA) has notified formation of new district, viz., Bajali in the state of Assam vide Gazette Notification No. ECF-No.367433/32 dated October 11, 2023. Jurisdictional demarcation of the Bajali district was notified vide GoA Notification dated October 21, 2024. Accordingly, it has been decided to designate the Lead Bank of the new district as below:
