THANE: A woman income tax (I-T) officer was remanded in police custody till Saturday after being caught red-handed by CBI sleuths accepting a bribe from a Thane builder. Accused Madhavi Chavan was picked up from the Wagle Estate I-T office late on Wednesday after she accepted Rs 1.5 lakh from Sandeep Salvi, a partner in a construction firm which has projects in Chiplun and Roha in the Konkan region.

According to the CBI official she had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs.600,000 and had accepted Rs.150,000 as advance Wednesday.

The complainant alleged that in September, she had demanded Rs.250,000 to avoid scrutiny of the IT returns.

However, a month later, she hiked the bribe amount to Rs.600,000 on grounds that a survey notice had already been served and if the money was not paid, the complainant’s company would be “surveyed”, the official said.

The complainant agreed to pay the advance and the rest within a week, after which he alerted the CBI sleuths who laid a trap and arrested her.

During raids carried out at her office and residence in Thane, the CBI has recovered incriminating documents pertaining to investments made by the accused officer.
