THE Income Tax department raided the premises of Dr Sanjay Shah, Dr Mahesh Thakkar, his wife Dr Bindu Thakkar and some of their colleagues, and recovered Rs 1.75 crore cash from them on Wednesday and Thursday.
Following a tip-off, the I-T team raided Shraddha Polyclinic at Ganesh Gawade road, Mulund (west), run by Shah and Thakkar. The team also raided Indira Nursing Home at MG Road, Mulund run by Dr Kapote, associated with Shah and the Thakkars. At the time of going to press, I-T officers had recovered Rs 1.75 crore in cash and a huge cache of jewellery. Sources said Dr Shah is a consultant with Wockhardt Hospital at Mulund.
According to an I-T officer, Dr Shah and Dr Thakkar have invested lakhs of rupees in Korpora building, a residential building at Mulund. Officers found documents that a certain Majithiya and Dedhiya managed the doctors’ money in the market. Officers also raided the residences and offices of Majithiya and Dedhiya. Majithiya is an octroi agent at the Mulund checknaka.Sources said that the doctors never maintained details of cash transactions. Some patients have told I-T officers that the doctors forced them to pay by cash.
Additional commissioner unit-9 (investigations) S L Meena confirmed that the premises of Shah, Thakkar, Majithiya and Dedhiya were raided but refused to divulge details.
