The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of the CBI investigating the bribery case involving senior income tax officials on Sunday searched the office and residence of Commissioner Anirudh Rai. Meanwhile, the CBI on Monday arrested assistant commissioner Anjali Bambole thus taking the number of persons in its custody to three.

The CBI on Friday had arrested additional commissioner of income tax Sumitra Banerjee and her husband Subrato for demanding a bribe of Rs 1.5 crore from a Thane-based builder. During the investigations, Sumitra reportedly told the CBI that part of the bribe was to be paid to her senior, Rai. The latter was not available for comment.

A CBI official confirmed the searches on Rai but refused to elaborate. We have not recovered much during the search. But investigations are on, he said.

Bambole, who was Sumitras junior, had come under the scanner after the CBI verified that she too had demanded bribe and already accepted Rs 10 lakh from the builder. On Monday, the CBI recovered Rs 6 lakh cash, property documents of three plots in Panvel, three plots in Nagpur and a flat in Andheri (W).Besides, we have got some more incriminating documents from the flat. We are studying the documents, said an official.

Meanwhile, the CBI also claimed to have traced two more lockers of Sumitra at IDBI bank in Mumbai. We recovered Rs 59 lakh in cash. We also found gold jewellery and ornaments whose valuation is still in progress, the official added.

I once told the CC, Mumbai that corruption had ended…..he was shocked….
I told him that it had been replaced by extortion.

    Corruption has become institutionalised.
But the people in the private sector are still worse.
At least Govt. officials have some sort of anti corruption laws, and the victims can approach the CBI and anti corruption set ups, the private sector can do what ever they like.

Coming back to corruption in government sector, there are so many departments and resources to check corruption, but they hardly develop a singe case on their own.

They must develop their own intelligence network.

Cooruption should be seen as a very serious offence. If the government is passing stringent legislations, like 56(2)(vii) enacting a deeming provision which in a lot of cases would even bring genuine transactions within tax net in the name of curbing tax avoidance, it is expected to be extremely strict in respect of corruptions and practises which result in leakages of rightful revenue due to it.

The corruption in the country is deep rooted and now lies in the entire system. The society has accepted it.There are so many big fishes but how many of them are caught. Many of the politicians are most corrupt…every body know them…They should be asked how the money in millions have been accumulated by them beyond their source of income..A small man is catch hold and big fishes are left out…

It was clear from the time the news broke that the couple could never succeed in life, which is the summary of all these news items, without keeping her superiors (as well as subordinates)in good humour ans duly sharing over the years all her assets acquired in her short but chequered career! CBI may do well to track the upward journey of all her payments made regularly ( for all her postings/transfers right from the day-1 of her joining the IRS)to the highest in the Revenue Deptt., including certainly the CBDT and the AD.VI of that infamous deptt.
