CBI Arrests Mumbai Income Tax Officer for Accepting Bribe

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) made a significant arrest today in Mumbai, apprehending an Income Tax Officer caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs. 4.00 lakh from the complainant.

Details of the Case

A case was filed against the accused Income Tax Officer, stationed at Ward-(2) (1) (1), Air India Building, Nariman Point, Mumbai. Allegations suggest that the officer demanded an undue advantage of Rs. 5.04 lakh from the complainant in exchange for issuing a lower Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) certificate concerning the sale of a property owned by the complainant’s maternal uncle, an NRI.

Initially, the accused demanded 2% of the property’s total deal value, amounting to Rs. 5.04 crore. After negotiations, this demand was reduced to 1% of the deal value. Eventually, the accused agreed to accept a bribe of Rs. 4.00 lakh.

Arrest and Seizures

The CBI orchestrated a trap, catching the accused red-handed in his office while accepting the undue advantage from the complainant. Subsequently, on 2nd May 2024, the accused was arrested by the CBI.

Searches were conducted at both the office and residential premises of the accused in Mumbai, resulting in the recovery of significant evidence. This included Rs. 15.00 lakh in cash, gold ornaments, and documents related to investments in both immovable and movable properties. The recovered items are currently under scrutiny as part of the ongoing investigation.

CBI Arrests an Income Tax Officer of Mumbai While Accepting Bribe of Rs. 4.00 Lakh from the Complainant

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has today arrested an Income Tax Officer, Mumbai while accepting bribe of Rs. 4.00 lakh from the complainant.

A case was registered by CBI against the accused Income Tax Officer, Ward-(2) (1) (1), Air India Building, Nariman Point, Mumbai on allegations that accused  demanded an undue advantage of Rs. 5.04 lakh from complainant  for issuing lower TDS certificate in respect of sale of a property of complainant’s maternal uncle, who is an NRI. The accused initially demanded undue advantage of 2% of the total deal value of the property worth Rs. 5.04 crore and after negotiation, reduced it to 1% of the deal value of the property.

Later, accused agreed to accept bribe of Rs. 4.00 lakh from the complainant.

CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red handed while accepting the undue advantage of Rs. 4.00 lakh in his office at Mumbai from complainant.  Subsequently, the accused was arrested by the CBI on 02.05.2024.

Searches were conducted at the office and residential premises of accused in Mumbai which led to recovery of Rs. 15.00 lakh cash, gold ornaments, papers related to investments in immovable and movable properties and the same are under scrutiny.

Investigation is continuing.
