The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has recently made arrests in a significant case involving corruption within the Central Goods & Services Tax (CGST) department. A Superintendent and an Inspector from the CGST office in Solan, Himachal Pradesh, have been apprehended on charges related to bribery.

The arrests were made following a complaint lodged with the CBI, alleging that the accused officials demanded a bribe of Rs.12,000 from a complainant to facilitate the processing and approval of CGST registration for his firm. Upon negotiation, the bribe amount was reduced to Rs.8,000, which the officials agreed to accept. The CBI, acting on this information, laid a trap and caught the Inspector red-handed while accepting the bribe. Subsequently, the identity of the other accused, initially identified as a Tax Assistant but later revealed to be a Superintendent, was also confirmed.

Following the arrests, searches were conducted at multiple locations including the official and residential premises of the accused in Solan, Mohali, and Una District. During these searches, several incriminating documents and articles were seized, further substantiating the allegations against the accused.

Both accused individuals were promptly presented before the Competent Court in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, marking a significant development in the case. The investigation remains ongoing, with the CBI continuing to gather evidence and pursue leads related to this corruption scandal.

The arrests of the CGST Superintendent and Inspector underscore the CBI’s commitment to combating corruption within government agencies. This case serves as a reminder of the stringent actions being taken to uphold transparency and accountability in public service. As the investigation progresses, further revelations are expected, shedding light on the extent of corruption and the measures needed to prevent such misconduct in the future.
