Samvardhana Motherson International Limited, through its Singapore-based subsidiary MSSL (S) Pte Ltd, has announced a strategic partnership with Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) to advance the development of Spinheat, a cutting-edge magnetic induction technology. This innovative approach aims to revolutionise the curing process of industrial coatings by significantly reducing energy consumption and time compared to traditional methods.

Spinheat, developed by NTU researchers, utilises magnetic nanoparticles embedded within coating materials such as adhesives and resins. When subjected to an alternating magnetic field, these nanoparticles generate heat directly within the coating, enabling faster curing without the need to heat the entire component. This method not only reduces energy usage but also lowers associated CO₂ emissions. Preliminary laboratory results indicate that Spinheat can achieve bonding strength comparable to conventional 24-hour oven curing in approximately one hour.

The collaboration seeks to leverage NTU’s expertise in magnetic materials and polymer science alongside Motherson’s manufacturing and engineering capabilities across both automotive and non-automotive sectors. The partnership aims to bring Spinheat to real-world production environments, focusing on applications in automotive and aerospace component coatings.

Dhruv Mehra, Director of Motherson Singapore, highlighted the significance of this collaboration, stating, “Innovation is at the core of how Motherson builds for the future. Partnering with NTU Singapore and using Motherson’s proprietary SVAG E3 methodology, we are excited to bring cutting-edge material science into real manufacturing environments and explore possibilities that can make our processes faster, cleaner, and more efficient.”

Assoc Prof Terry Steele from NTU expressed optimism about the collaboration, emphasising the potential of Spinheat to meet the demands of automotive manufacturing. Prof. Raju V. Ramanujan also noted the strategic importance of developing Spinheat for industrial applications, particularly in the automotive and aerospace sectors.

This collaboration represents a significant step forward in sustainable manufacturing practices, aligning with industry trends towards reducing environmental impact and improving efficiency. Analysts view this partnership as a strategic move for Motherson, potentially enhancing its competitive edge in the global market by integrating advanced technologies into its manufacturing processes.
