IRCTC collaborates with QCI for enhanced food safety audits on Indian Railways

In a significant development aimed at elevating the dining experience for rail passengers, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Quality Council of India (QCI). This collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), introduces a robust, technology-driven, third-party audit mechanism to ensure superior food safety and hygiene standards across all IRCTC-managed catering services, both on trains and at stations.

The partnership mandates QCI to conduct rigorous, unannounced inspections quarterly and half-yearly, adhering to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulations and international culinary standards. The audits will be carried out by certified professionals, ensuring compliance and enhancing the overall quality of food service. The MoU was signed by senior representatives from both organisations, including Sh. Sudhir Warrier from IRCTC and Sh. Subroto Ghosh from QCI, with notable figures from both entities in attendance.

To ensure transparency and prevent data manipulation, the audit process will utilise QCI’s advanced digital infrastructure. Inspectors will employ a proprietary mobile application equipped with geo-tagging, time-stamping, and photographic evidence capabilities. Audit reports will be submitted within 24 hours, facilitating real-time identification of operational deficiencies and enabling swift Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) measures against non-compliant vendors.

The initiative promises several public benefits, including enhanced onboard dining experiences and standardised quality at station-based catering units. It also ensures strict vendor accountability through digital evidence-backed reports and enforces hygiene and grooming protocols for staff. Furthermore, the agreement provides a framework for future enhancements, such as passenger satisfaction surveys and specialised staff training.

Analysts view this partnership as a pivotal move towards a transparent, passenger-centric approach in railway hospitality. By leveraging QCI’s expertise in large-scale public monitoring projects, such as Swachh Survekshan and nationwide food surveillance, the collaboration is expected to significantly upgrade the quality of meals served on Indian Railways, aligning them with the highest safety and health standards.
