A special CBI court sentenced former commissioner of central excise (North East) to four years rigorous imprisonment on charges of bribery and tax evasion. The special CBI judge passed the sentence convicting former central excise commissioner LR Mithran to four years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 20,000 under section 11 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Ms Mithran was found guilty of having taken bribe of Rs eight lakh that included one vehicle and Rs five lakh in cash during the course of her service as commissioner of central excise in Shillong in 1996.
”The former commissioner of central excise was found guilty of having taken a bribe of Rs eight lakh during the course of her service,” VK Jindal, senior Special Prosecutor of CBI said.
The lawyer also said the case was related to a company which has its head office in Kolkata when the then chairman and managing director of the company had offered bribe to Ms Mithran after the anti-tax evasion branch filed a case against the company for evading duties worth Rs 36 crore.
However, when Ms Mithran was assigned the case, she reduced the amount from Rs 36 crore to nine crore after taking the bribe from the company.
The CBI prosecutor also said it is a non-bailable offence wich deals with a government servant taking favours from some other person.
The CBI had registered a case against Ms Mithran in 1999 under Prevention of Corruption Act.
