A CBI Court in Siliguri on February 26, 2026 convicted Achintya Kumar Pramanik, the then Superintendent of Central Excise in the office of the Assistant Commissioner, Central Excise and Service Tax, Cooch Behar Division, Cooch Behar, in a bribery case. The court sentenced him to four years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 40,000.

The Central Bureau of Investigation registered the case on September 14, 2015, based on a complaint alleging that the accused had demanded a bribe of Rs. 1,00,000 from the proprietor of a private firm. Following the complaint, the CBI conducted a trap operation on September 15, 2015. During the operation, the accused was caught while demanding and accepting Rs. 30,000 from the complainant. The amount was recovered from his possession.

After completing the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against the accused on December 30, 2015. The matter proceeded to trial before the CBI Court in Siliguri.

Upon conclusion of the trial, the court convicted the accused and awarded the sentence of four years’ rigorous imprisonment along with the monetary penalty. The conviction and sentence were pronounced on February 26, 2026.

CBI Court Sentences Former Superintendent of Central Excise to Four Years Rigorous Imprisonment in a Bribery Case

The CBI Court, Siliguri, on 26.02.2026, convicted and sentenced the accused Achintya Kumar Pramanik, the then Superintendent of Central Excise, O/o the Assistant Commissioner, Central Excise and Service Tax, Cooch Behar Division, Cooch Behar to Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) for 4 Years with a fine of Rs. 40,000 in a bribery case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered the instant case on 14.09.2015 on the basis of a complaint alleging demand of bribe of Rs. 1,00,000 by the accused from the Proprietor of a private firm.

The CBI laid a trap on 15.09.2015 and caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting bribe of Rs. 30,000 from the complainant, and the bribe amount was recovered from his possession.

After completion of investigation, CBI filed chargesheet against the accused on 30.12.2015.

The Hon’ble Court, after the trial, convicted and sentenced the accused person accordingly.
